Bill Mackay, 84, came to a peaceful rest at the home of his beloved niece Jeannie and nephew Myron Heywood on High St. in St. Johnsbury, VT on Saturday October 13th. He was surrounded by loved ones, including his loyal dog Bella.
Bill was born of February 21, 1934 in St. Johnsbury to William Wallace (Mack) and Gertrude (Weston) Mackay.
Bill attended school in St. Johnsbury at the St. Johnsbury Trade School. He had many jobs starting at an early age. In his early 20s he went to work for the VT Highway Department until his retirement.
Bill was a crafty builder of scaled replicas, such as his family homestead on Deer Ave, a working saw mill, covered bridges, and several gas powered planes. He was also an avid golfer, playing an average 27 holes a day, then coming home and tinkering on his tractors and golf cart. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and reading about history.
On November 26, 1966 he married his love, Katherine Heath.
He is survived by daughter Gail and Husband Gary Brooks of Gilman, VT; son Steve and wife Mary Mackay of West Charleston, VT; daughter Joyce and husband Rick Kline of Littleton, NH; son Jeffery Mackay of St. Johnsbury; daughter Tamatha and husband Robert Spicer of Granby, VT; sister Margaret Irwin of St. Johnsbury; and brother Maitland “Bob” Mackay of West Danville, VT. There are several grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom share special memories.
He is predeceased by his wife, parents, and sister Murial Taylor.
He will be sadly missed by all, including his special golf buddies.
